Dear Richard,

You are absolutely correct, the original saying is
"home is where the hearth is". Infact, hearth was
generally olde English for home. However, since
hearths have become few and far between, hearth has
been replaced by heart in the saying.  The hearth at
one time was considered the heart of the English home.
Hence the interchangeable use of the word hearth and
heart.
