Goa is the Kashmir of Maharashtra
Veteran Marathi filmmaker, Ramesh Deo, who had
produced the controversial VCD on Goa's Liberation
during the tenure of the BJP government, has made
yet another controversial statement that Goa is the
Kashmir of Maharashtra.
He made this contentious statement during his visit to
Goa to attend IFFI 2006 recently. Ramesh Deo is not an
authority, whose statement has any weight in the
corridors of power and hence may not merit any
attention.
Yet, the statement deserves condemnation from all
Goans because such a thought can bring doom to our
peaceful and fast-progressing state.
When he was asked whether his interaction with the
people of Goa was hampered because he could not
understand Konkani language, he replied,
"No, in fact, I can understand Goanese. It is not a
difficult language. It is not a difficult language. I
can speak a little Goanese too." It upsets me
because this is the man who was entrusted to produce a
VCD on Goa's liberation and hence he should have known
all the facts related to Goa, be they social,
political, cultural, religious, literary, etc and yet
he does not know that there is no language called
Goanese. Is he not aware that the Official Language of
Goa is Konkani? This is the height of ignorance...
Does he not know that Goa is a full-fledged state of
the Union of India just like Maharashtra? Then where
does the question of Goa being the Kashmir of
Maharashtra arise? Such irresponsible statements can
be expected from politicians but not from people who
are involved in the promotion of culture.

maker prior to the IFFI close down? Were the
patrakars too busy to focus the attention of the
Congress (ex-BJP/ex-MGP/ex-Congress turned BJP turned
Congress combine) Government?
