Since the Olympics are organised on a much larger scale than IFFI, it is obvious the bids are made much more in advance. Whether IFFI was foisted on Goa or whether our politicains lobbied for it, is debatable. I tend to see it as the latter. Whether the planning and implemenatation should have been one off or progressive is again part of a much larger debate (development v/s funding) that planners themselves don't quite agree on. The same debate also carries over to other fields like corporate strategic planning. There is no right and wrong here, just two different approaches. If the the crowds and traffic during IFFI are the "millstones" round our necks, I think it is a small price to pay for the wider roads, beautiful promenades, a world class multiplex, superb restoration of the Old GMC and Kala Academy and a generally fresher looking Panjim that has resulted post-IFFI. I must say that if anyone has a right to complain about the drawbacks of poor traffic and crowd management it is me because my house is across the road from INOX. Whatever your reservations about IFFI itself, do you agree that Panjim is alot better post IFFI or not? Regards Sunith Phillip writes: There are a couple of imporant differences. Cities bid well in advance for events like the Olympics. When they are selected they get several years to build the facilities etc required. And the event itself is practically one-off at least for several decades. In the case of IFFI, the event was foisted on Panjim/Goa. Uptill just a few months earlier there was uncertainty about whether it would actually be held here. Then about whether it would be a "permanent venue". There is still uncertainty about this after 3 rounds. Even so it was always envisaged as a continuing affair to some extent. The main implication of this is that planning and imlementation could have been done progressively as experience was gained instead of as if there was no tomorrow (like in the Olympics). -- Sunith D Velho [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Goanet supports BMX, the alumni network of Britto's, St Mary's and Xavier's -- three prominent institutions in Mapusa, Goa.
