BMX reunion between Dec 16-21

NT News Desk

Mapusa, Dec 14: The ex-students of three prominent educational
institutions from the North Goa commercial town of Mapusa are
organising an alumni gathering that draws participants from Goa, the
rest of India and abroad.

Labelled BMX reunion 2006, the event brings together alumni from St
Britto's, St Mary's, and St Xavier's College for a series of events
being held in Calangute, Mapusa, Parra, Bambolim and Old Goa between
December 17-21.

Alumni and their families are already trickling in for the event,
founded in 2002 by a group of ex-students meeting informally at a pub
in Toronto, Canada.

A holiday in Toronto, by Mapusa-based Ms Lucindo Faria, resulted in an
informed get-together among old friends, that snowballed into the
formation of BMX. Mr Joe Nunes (Class of 1968, St Britto's) has played
a key role in taking the idea forward and making things happen.

Since then, the BMX network has worked to build a $25,000 fund for
bursaries for meritorious students, donated $1000 in local charities,
and has held annual picnics for BMXers and families, for the past
three years.

But more importantly, the networking initiative is also aimed at
helping build these two schools and colleges, with the skills, ideas,
support and encouragement of alumni, currently placed in various parts
of the globe and having access to different avenues.

During the coming week, the BMX meeting will see a welcome function on
December 16 (Palmarinha Resort, Calangute), an inaugural 'alumni day'
on December 17 (St Xavier's 10 am), on December 18 a reunion ball
(Emerald Lawns, 8 pm), on December 19 a picnic (Bambolim Beach Resort
11 am), on December 20 a sports day (of St Mary's at St Britto's
Ground, 3.30 pm), and on December 21 an Xams Tableaux (9 am St
Brittos). This will conclude with a boat cruise and litany at Monte,
Old Goa (December 21, 4 p.m).

Incidentally, as part of the functions, the St Xavier's College, has
announced plans to launch its Xavier Radio community radio station,
and take forward plans for a Fr Nicolau Pereira Auditorium with a
caapacity of 1500

Organisers of the event, calling for wider participation, said: "BMX
Goa 2006 is a chance to meet your friends and teachers, and journey
through 'your days'. An emotional experience it will be, as you fast
forward into the past, reliving your school and college days all over
again. Each of us owe it to give back to our institute for making us
responsible citizens, and honour our alma mater."

A specially crafted book of alumni writings, called "Those good ol'
days" is also to be released during the event. Earlier this month,
another book of memoirs of St Britto's old boys (called 'Britto
Retro') was also released. BMX's punch-line, is the Konkani phrase
"Mog asundi".
