"Villagers protest against large-scale constructions in Goa" http://in.news.yahoo.com/061227/139/6amft.html <Goa has been facing acute shortage of infrastructure to accommodate the mushrooming tourist arrivals. During October-March, nearly 400,000 tourists flock to Goa's beaches and palm groves. (ANI)>
This doesnt seem right. Maybe the 400,000 refers to "foreign" tourists, not "all" tourists" since the predominant tourism to Goa is nowadays domestic. Even regarding foreign tourists, the number seems to vary from 320,000 to 480,000 last year/season. And per recent data on charter tourists posted on goanet, the arrivals in November were only about 30K. This gives an annual/season figure of only 180K, that too assuming all are foreign tourists. Some charter passengers are bound to be NRGs, VFRs, NRIs etc. So there is a gap of 220K (i.e. 400,000-180,000) to be accounted for. They would travel by domestic flights from Bombay etc . This works out to nearly 50 foreign tourists per flight (26 per day as per media reports) during a 180 day season. That's 30% of a B737/A320. Seems high. Maybe half of them take the surface route i.e. train, bus, car etc.
