What Mario is describing is a version of what is known in Philosophy as
Pascal's wager, see
http://plato.stanford.edu/entries/pascal-wager/. There are variations, also in
different
religions. Pascal, being a cautios man, bet that God exists. It depends I
suppose on risk-aversion
and how much risk one is willing to take. Most people are very cautious
(afraid?), hence most
believe in God and are religious.
P.S. I have read FAR MORE hubris from believers on this forum than atheists or
agnostics.
