The state unit president of the party, Mr Shripad Naik who accepted the party membership forms from Mr and Ms Fazal said that the BJP would make "just use of the administrative skills of the former governor". The leader of the opposition, Mr Manohar Parrikar was also present on the occasion. "Mr Fazal who has been residing in the state after his tenure as the governor of Maharashtra, expressed his wish to join the BJP," Mr Naik informed, "and the party was honoured to have such a distinguished and senior diplomat as its member." Interacting with the pressmen during the occasion, Mr Fazal said that after he finished his gubernatorial duties, he thought of settling in Goa and refrain from taking part in any political activity. "I had also planned to devote myself to study literature and cultural affairs," he added. However, unfortunately the state, during past one-and-a-half year witnessed rampant corruption as well as inefficiency and carelessness on the part of the government, forcing the public to undertake agitations against the regime, Mr Fazal observed, adding, "all this resulted in developmental retardation of Goa, throwing back one of the best states in the world. Therefore I would be doing my duty as a good citizen by joining this political party," he pointed out. Observing the erstwhile BJP rule in the state as the governance which acted towards social cohesion and richly contributed towards the cultural sphere, Mr Fazal maintained, "Whether the BJP government was corrupt is a matter of record; the public can see it for themselves." Replying to a question, Mr Fazal said, "As a Muslim, I can say with authority that the Congress party is fooling the public under the guise of secularism and creating division among the communities." Answering another question as to what position would he accept in the BJP, if the party comes to power in the state, Mr Fazal said, "I would not like to be presumptive and has no greed to be a minister." I have come to serve the party, he added. Mr Fazal also stood by his decision of dissolving the state government in 2002. "The government was dissolved on the recommendation of the then ruling cabinet," he maintained.
