Kevin,
I think you should have no qualms about accepting the
fact that you are an atheist. But I assume that what
you have in mind is the fact that the atheist label is
a slur used by religious chauvinists and mild bigots.
Calling somebody an atheist even for general rational
criticism of undesirable religious practices is the
only expression of religious bigotry that is still
tolerated in today's society. These people do not have
a genuine commitment toward practicing secularism and
pluralism.
