This month's Goanet operations sponsored by Mrs. Daisy Faleiro If you would like to sponsor Goanet's operations contact: Herman Carneiro - [EMAIL PROTECTED] ------------------------------------------------------------------------ This is a preliminary attempt to provide a Goa-centric (rather than plane-centric) view of crashes (1) at Dabolim airport, (2) its vicinity (including on land and at sea) and (3) elsewhere, based on data accessed from goanet (source: FN, Dec 6, 2005). 1. At Dabolim airport: Nil on the basis of the present data. But there have been at least two since then involving Sea Harriers, in which there was one fatality. 2(a). In Dabolim: Two IL38s in a mid air collision during a practice flight for the squadron's 25th anniversary. Fatalities: 15 including 3 civilians on the ground. 2(b). Near Dabolim (at sea): Sea Harriers in May 1988, June 1992, Dec 1992, Aug 1994, Feb 1996, Sept 1997, May 2001, Aug 2003. As mentioned in my recent post on this subject some of the locations are ambiguous but I am going by the author's statement about "number of Sea Harrier crashes OFF GOA not being funny" (emphasis mine). What is missing is information about whether an aircaft carrier was involved or if the flight was a shore based (purely Dabolim) operation. Also information about fatalities if any. 3. Elsewhere: June 1988 in Chengalpatu district of Tamil Nadu (presumably involving the naval air station at Arakkonam which has a runway even bigger than Dabolim airport), Nov 1998 (in Indian Ocean presumably involving the naval air station at Kochi). These events suggest that naval air stations other than Dabolim have also been engaged in Sea Harrier operations. It is not known if they still do so. Please check out the classification etc above and let me know if there are any errors. Thanks. Extracts:<Military statistics indicate however that a number of Sea Harriers havebeen lost in accidents here. This includes losses during accidents inMay 1988 (near Goa), June 1988 (Chengalpatu district), June 1992, Dec1992, Aug 1994, Feb 1996 (missing during nightflying oversea from Goa),Sept 1997 (in the sea off Goa), Nov 1998 (in Indian Ocean), May 2001(near Canacona, Goa), Aug 2003 (off the Goa sea).> < ... a mid-air collision of the two [IL38] crafts ...One craft ploughed into the half-finished bungalow, while the otherended up as mangled parts in a fenced-off area across a road, less thana kilometre away >
