A State level seminar at St. Xaviers College, Mapusa-Goa
The Post Graduate Department of Chemistry
organized a state level seminar on the topic
Science, Technology and Environment on 24th
February 2014, to mark the Diamond Jubilee Celebrations of UGC.
The inaugural function began at 10.00 a.m.
Present on the dais for the function were the
Chief Guest- Dr. Gulshan Relhan, Nuclear and
Analytical Chemist, Ex-BARC, Mumbai; the Keynote
Speaker- Dr. B. E. Kumara Swamy, Associate
Professor, Dept. of Industrial Chemistry, Kuvempu
University, Shimoga; Principal of St. Xaviers
College-Dr. (Fr.) Walter de Sa; Seminar
Co-ordinator-Dr. Tushar Anvekar and M. Sc. Course Co-ordinator-
Dr. J. P. P. Pacheco.
The Principal of the college Dr. (Fr.) Walter de
Sa welcomed the gathering and stressed on the
relevance of the topic of the seminar and wished
that the seminar would help the participants to
learn the recent developments in science and technology.
After the floral welcome and lighting of the
traditional lamp, Mrs. Mamata Prabhugaonkar,
faculty of P. G. Dept. of Chemistry introduced
the chief guest and keynote speaker to the gathering.
Dr. Gulshan Relhan in his inaugural speech
remarked that, it is important for the young
people to know the reality of environment. He
mentioned about various discoveries made by
scientists and their contributions to the
development of science and the common man. He
also made a special mention about his belief
that, Chemistry is the mother of all
inventions. He concluded by saying that, there
should be a sustainable development which can be
achieved by preserving the environment.
Later Dr. Tushar Anvekar, Seminar Co-ordinator
proposed the vote of thanks. The inaugural
programme ended with the singing of the college
anthem and was compered by Dr. Teotone Vaz.
Dr. B. E. Kumara Swamy delivered the keynote
address on the topic, Cyclic Voltammetry and its
Applications in Research. His presentation
included salient features of electroanalytical
techniques and its advantages along with
fabrication of the basic equipments. He explained
the concept of cyclic voltammetry, the different
parameters involved in cyclic voltamogram and its
wide application in the development of sensors
for dopamine in the presence of ascorbic acid and
uric acid. He also mentioned the recent
development in the technique for neurochemical measurements.
The first technical session by Dr. Vikas
Pissurlekar, Associate Professor, PES College,
Ponda was on the topic, Impact of global warming
and ozone depletion on environment. Dr.
Pissurlekar during his session touched upon some
of the major issues affecting the environment
like melting of glaciers, impact of mining on
the environment along with their consequences.
The second technical session was conducted by Dr.
Gulshan Relhan, who spoke on the topic Nuclear
Energy and Environment. Inspired by the thought
of Dr. Homi Jehangir Bhaba that, There is No
Power as Costly as No Power, he added that,
Nuclear Energy is the Cleanest Source of Power,
whereby India has 20 nuclear power plants in
operation. He highlighted the discoveries of
nuclear fission in the past, explained the
benefits of radiation in the diagnosis of cancer
and provided important information on the
Fukushima incident. He concluded by quoting the
inspiring words of Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam that,
Nuclear Power is the Gateway to a Prosperous Future.
Dr. Mahesh Satu Majik conducted the third
technical session on the topic, Development of
Second Generation of Nucleosides for Cancer and
Viral Diseases. He introduced the development of
biologically active nucleosides and highlighted
the importance of adenosine receptors as
promising targets for the treatment of several
diseases. He also dwelt on the history of cancer
chemotherapy and classified the chemotherapeutic
drugs. He explained the development of
anti-cancer agents and the developments in the
design of nucleosides for eye glaucoma treatment.
During the valedictory function, Dr. (Fr.) Walter
de Sa congratulated the students, teaching and
non-teaching staff of P. G. Dept. of Chemistry
for shouldering the responsibility of organizing
the seminar successfully. Dr. B. E. Kumara Swamy,
Chief Guest for the valedictory function, then
gave away the certificates along with Dr. (Fr.)
Walter de Sa. Dr. J. P. P. Pacheco,
M. Sc. Course Co-ordinator, proposed the vote of
thanks. The programme ended with the singing of the national anthem.
