I ask you again ... what right do you have to pass such judgment about people who have made those choices in life ? Does everyone working in the gulf have a job as a crate carrying shippie ?? Does everyone working on a ship have a menial job ?? The reason why goa (as quoted by the periodical india today ) has the second highest per capita income in India, is due to the fact that so many of our goan brothers are sacrificing their lives by working abroad , away from their families just to give their loved ones a better life and a better future. How would i know all this ? I know it because my dad (like most other dad's in goa) is a gulfie too and i know what sacrifices he has made to help me become what I am today. My dad's family could hardly make ends meet ,and the reason we are quite well to do today is because of this "gulf" job my dad had taken up, and now he is working as an operations controller in the port. Had he stayed back here and continued with his job at the Bombay port trust... I wonder if we would even be able to afford a decent apartment.Another thing , it is a great feat that you have accomplished by graduating from an IIT , and I would like to congratulate you for that. But seriously , how many fellow goans from your time actually had the resources to actually go ahead and pursue their dreams of becoming an engineer or a doctor ?? And are the IIT's the only sure shot method of ensuring that goa will develop as a state ?? I know so many bright goans who had to give up pursuing their dreams due to financial problems or due to time constraints. Its not always as easy as it seems to be .We have it much easier now , But you would know that during those days there were financial and social obligations (like getting the sisters married off) that one had to think of , and choices had to be made accordingly. So before actually criticizing and generalizing that all goan gulfies are doing menial jobs and carrying crates , take a moment and think of all the sacrifices and the choices beyond their control that they had to make in order to ensure that someone else they care for lives a better life. This is my first post on goa-net. I joined this forum just a few weeks back. At 23 , I know I'm not as experienced as most of the distinguished members out here , but whatever criticism , both negative or positive would be gladly accepted. Ray John Mascarenhas. From: "CARMO DCRUZ" Crate-carrying Goans may have given way to fork-lifts in the Gulf - but they are the same undereducated menial jobs in the Gulf that all Goans should despise as they aim for the higher echelons of Gulf Society. (like the educated Lebanese, Egyptions, etc)
