Chief minister Manohar Parrikar on Wednesday informed the state assembly that police would be stationed outside bars and they would use alcometers to check the alcohol levels of all those coming out of the liquor premises and riding or driving. "We will clampdown on drunken driving. Police will be kept with alcometers outside bars," Parrikar said. There are 12,500 bars and alcohol outlets in Goa, while only 7,200 policemen. Parrikar also advised members of the House not to drive their vehicles if they have consumed alcohol as they may be fined. TOI had recently highlighted the issue of drunken driving. Parrikar said that 772 drunken driving cases have been booked this year and the drive would be intensified. Calangute MLA Michael Lobo said that vehicles ridden by tourists caught for drunken driving are attached by the police and it is the owner of the vehicle who has to face the hardship. He suggested that the government recover money from the tourists and not from the two-wheeler owners who give it on rent. Replying to Lobo, Parrikar said the government cannot help as the offence is compoundable by the magistrate. He advised two-wheeler owners to retain the passports or take Rs 5,000 deposits from the tourists before renting them vehicles. follo <http://www.follo.co.in/>: Bars <http://follo.co.in/Barsha>
