SONGS... A THOUSAND PAGES IN ALL [SATURDAY SPECIAL] Goanet
Were you born in the 1950s and grew up as a teenager in the 1960s glued to your radio listening to Jim Reeves or Pat Boone or Cliff Richard or Connie Francis or Ricky Nelson, Elvis Presley the Beatles or the Seekers? Were you a fan of the popular musicals of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s such as My Fair Lady or The Sound of Music or Hello Dolly or Fiddler on the Roof? Do you still recall with nostalgia the music of World War II, crooners such as Bing Crosby, Perry Como and Frank Sinatra? Or are you a fan of real old-time music -- of the immortal songs that were famous long before you were born? Songs such as Love’s Old Sweet Song, Moonlight Bay, Missouri Waltz, Silver Threads among the Gold to name a few. Then 'A Thousand Pages of Songs' might be just the book you would like to have for yourself. It is a work of scholarship and research. It is quite literally an encyclopedia of songs of all eras ranging from medieval folk songs... through the era of parlour songs of the late 19th and early 20th century ... to the rock and roll music of the 1950s and 1960s. Browsing through the pages of this book you will come to know not just the words of each song, but also its history, the year of composition, the names of the songwriter(s), the artists who made the song famous, and many other details. Dr. Michael Lobo will make a presentation on his book *A Thousand Pages of Songs* (with historical notes) on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 5 pm. This will be followed by a programme of popular songs from the Opera presented by Soprano Faye Monteiro with accompanist Ingrid Ann Nazareth. The event will be held at Fundacao Oriente, Behind People's High School, Fontainhas, Panjim, Goa. It is open to the public.
