Before Indira Gandhi imposed emergency, she repeatedly accused the opposition of conspiring against her personally to topple her. She employed her Cabinet Ministers also to spread such theories. Her Cabinet was full of sycophants, who used to crawl when asked to bend. There was a race within her own cabinet for proximity to her. A seasoned Minister then famously proclaimed that ‘Indira is India and India is Indira’. Another, quite shamelessly, said he will even sweep the floor if she asked him to do so, and there was no ‘Swatch Bharat’ campaign those days! Her Ministers were outdoing each other in professing personal loyalty to her. Their primary objective was to spread the theory that whatever Indira Gandhi thought was good for India was the ultimate and that none in the Country had the capacity to think like her. This theory was actually at a variance with Indira Gandhi's intellect which was known to be at best moderate! Indira Gandhi then accused Jayprakash Narayan of instigating the Armed Forces and the Police against discharging their duties. She spread a theory that Jayprakash Narayan was indulging in a conspiracy against the Country. But, Indira Gandhi did not ask the Police to slap ‘Sedition’ charges against anyone then. This is because, she knew that Sedition charges had to be proved in Courts. She did not have much faith in the Judiciary because a case was then being heard against herself for electoral malpractice. Finally she imposed the much famed ‘Emergency’. The root of this decision was an alleged conspiracy against her own authority. When L.K.Advani said that there was a possibility that emergency could be imposed again (but subsequently retracted!) he did not say this without a thought!
