At a recent meeting at Goregaon, citizens met their elected corporator to
address the ongoing problems

The Bombay Catholic Sabha (BCS) recently organised an interactive session at
Goregaon's Our Lady of the Rosary Parish with its elected corporators. The
meeting gave citizens an opportunity to ask questions regarding ongoing
problems in their neighbourhood-issues that have remained unresolved, possible
solutions for them as well as the work done in the last four years.

Apart from BCS and the Parish, this meet was also coordinated and organised by
the Goregaon West Unit, with the support of St. Thomas Parish BCS Goregaon East
Unit, AGNI, CitySpace-NAGAR, P/South Ward ALM group and other civic activists.

Corporator Pramila Shinde who attended the event among others, had a two-hour
long discussion with the audience. Shinde, who is the corporator of ward number
51 of Goregaon area had an extensive chat with the citizens, answered their
questions and discussed three major issues raised by them.

Goregaon Maternity Hospital Demolition

A question raised by one of the citizens was about the status of the Goregaon
Maternity Hospital that has been demolished for a while now, but has not seen
any further development. The member wanted a status report and a plan of action
regarding the same.

Shinde replied, "There was a need for a special pediatric ward for the children
at this hospital and that is the reason the work had to start at the hospital.
This change will make doctors accessible for the kids and is therefore, a major
reason as to why it is taking time. Soon, it will be available to all with 50
beds."

Redevelopment of Motilal Nagar 1, 2, 3 and 4

Citizens living in these areas are stuck in a messy situation due to the
paperwork for the redevelopment going back and forth. The citizens wanted to
know how long it would take to get the problem resolved, given that even MHADA
is involved in the process.

Shinde replied, "We are conducting several sessions and meetings to discuss the
same. We are proposing to give the maximum benefit to the residents so that
they can have spacious and better houses. This may take a bit longer but we are
certainly following up on this."

Open space encroachment

A major issue that has been nagging Goregaon residents is the encroachment of
open spaces in their neighbourhood. Squatters have taken over a large a portion
of an open maidan and this has led to filthy surroundings, while also
questioning the security of the residents.

Shinde took note of this and said that the issue will be worked upon
immediately. She said that since this was not reported to her, she wasn't aware
of the gravity of the situation. "Henceforth, if there is any encroachment
anywhere in my constituency, please let me know and I'll work on it
immediately," she concluded.
