DOUBLE ENGINE FERRIES WILL SOLVE PROBLEM SAYS DHAVALIKAR The moment Casinos came to exist in Mandovi river, our ferries were ill treated by the Government with step motherly treatment.
Even during Portuguese time the ferries had two engines in case one engine fails. These ferries were safe to cross the rivers. At times there were some problems but they were not so serious. Now Panjim ferries are rarely used by the commuters on account of not having a back up engine or in working condition and because of congestion on the river. At any moment a tragedy can take place, GOD forbid. I have seen people prefer taking Bus transport to reach Betim/Verem because people are afraid to use ferries. Now, Dhavalikar telling us that double engine will solve the problem, (source Navhind Times dt 16th 4,2016). He is totally mistaken. Merely putting a second engine isn't enough since the navigation dept have become handicapped and no service personnel are been recruited neither they have capabilities to repair the engines or look after the ferries. Even navigation Dept housed in Panjim jetty, is shifted elsewhere, or not existing in the original place but only offices of casinos are been operating, under the nose of Captain of Ports. The best solution for the Government is to get rid of casinos and concentrate on improving the regular ferries and save ferry users from tragedies or accidents. Or have many number of bridges to cross Panjim to Betim, and get rid of ferries since construction of Bridges have become a style or novelty in Goa. Everybody wants development but at what cost?
