I remember reading a National Geographic, before I was
a teenager, which had a segment on gunpowder factories
in China. Some of the factories have operated since
the 10th century as gunpowder was later used for
fireworks.
If it is important, I will take the time to find the
references that you so desire. Else a quick google of
the word "gunpowder" will produce 3.4 million
references, all confirming that gunpowder was first
manufactured in China.
Lastly, as an interesting tidbit, gunpowder has also
been used as a "distemper."
