CONVENTION OF THE GOAN DIASPORA FROM GOA INTO THE WORLD
Lisbon, Portugal June 15-17, 2007 Details at:

Selma:
'The RSS is not an elected body representative of the
people and hence it has no jurisdiction in India.'
RE; In a coalition and party system of democracy, no ONE is 'an elected body
of "representatives of the people", and yet they all have "jurisdiction"
(sic), 'PARTI'cularly in India. Howd'ya like that?

Selma: However, the government should definitely be looking
into what is taught in schools.
Re: Hay, what do you think the GOVT. is doing? It has been looking since
1947, and since 1956, it set up NCERT ( since probably it got tired of
looking directly for 9 years!!!)

Selma:-'
Isn't it a fact that students who come from madrasas
fair poorly at higher institutes of learning in India,
not to mention in the work-place? Hence, aren't we
doing a dis-service to young children who have no
choice in what their parents choose as their
instruction?

RE: In Pakisthan too, students to seats of higher learning come from
Madrassas. They do not seem to fare badly there?

Selma:-
If someone wants to learn classical Islamic
literature, or the trails of Moses and Abraham, or the
medicinal merits of ayurveda, the benefits of yoga
breathing or the joys of stamp collecting, they are
free to do so at their own leisure but school
curriculum should be secular in all respects.

Re: I'd say not beyond a point, as it is giving freedom of choice to minds
too young and naive. However, there is no restriction of choice in any
university or a seat of higher learning. a mussalman may choose to be a
vedic scholar, (unless of course his mom (still) 'makes eyes at him' from
beyond the screen!)

Selma:-
Incase you are going to ask if I will apply the same
standards to Catholic schools (also known as covent
schools), the reason they do well in India is because
their curriculum is secular and they offer an A-grade
education in all respects.

RE: Oh yeah? A-grade eh? That's what the anglophiles and other philistines
believe. ( Here we are discussing what best education to give a child, yet
Selma is convinced b'forehand about what a 'grade' in education is. Her
slogan : CONVENT EDUCATION,BEST EDUCATION! Obviously, she has a very
convent conditioned notion of the complex palimpsest of 7000 years of a
LIVING culture called India.
By the way, what is your definition of " Do well in India", Selma?
Demand a fork-n-knife at lunch in a village hut in Rajasthan while on some
field work, for instance?

Charudatta Prabhudesai,
Khoro Goinkar!
