*ONE FINAL ATTEMPT* *TO SAVE MOPA* *ELVIDIO MIRANDA* In a day, the people of Mopa have to organize themselves to determine whether they are absolutely willing to allow the laying of the foundation stone for the Mopa airport on Sunday, the 13th. If no action is taken, it will mean that they are resigned to the fact that they are going to subject themselves to something that is against their express wishes. It would be a tragedy that will have wide-ranging repercussions for them for a long time and will mean surrender of their rights to protect their own interests which should be paramount. They can later have no regrets if they do not make a final bid on protecting the land they cherish and still consider to be the natural bounty to be saved for posterity. Let it be clear, that it is up to them to determine if they have the will to prevent usurping of their land, rich in diverse flora and fauna, besides natural springs and their traditional livelihood which will cease to exist if the Mopa airport is constructed. A last gasp herculean effort should be made by the locals, who can galvanize themselves to determine whether they seek to protect their rustic ambience or are passive to the fact that a man-made structure will deprive them of the natural environs. Under the banner of Mopa Vimintal Pidit Xetkari Samiti, (MVPXS) the residents of Mopa should immediately organize to meet en masse and decide what is best for themselves. Word should be passed round and a mass movement can be conducted, since despite their having knocked at the doors of the corridors of power, they have not received any communication to assuage their fears and to at the least postpone the event of the laying of the foundation stone for Mopa airport which still hangs in the balance and has not gained consensus among the residents. The people have to be sure, that they are themselves the masters of their own destiny and like what happened in Singrur, they can grind to a halt designs to impose upon them what they feel is against their wishes. At this late hour, the locals have to help themselves.
