The pledge was taken today 30th May on the occasion of Goa Statehood Day at the culmination of the Voter Awareness Drive which began on 21st April with a focus on the village Panchayat elections. The 40 day awareness drive consisted of a range of programs and actions which included release of Voters Manifestos, Meet Your Candidate programs, consumer meetings, submitting of memorandums, street side awareness actions, display of slogan banners & placards and distribution of information slips. The drive included a focus on the lack of devolution of powers as per the 73rd and 74th Constitutional Amendment, the need for a New Goa Municipal Act, the voters "Right to Know" and "Right to Say No", the importance of Voters Consultation Meetings and Citizens Audits. The drive has also promoted 5th May as "Panchayat Accountability Day" and 2nd June as "Legislative Assembly Accountability Day" every year until 2012. GOACAN is convinced that coalition politics is the future for Goa in view of the past wherein political parties have abused the absolute majority provided to them therefore only a fractured mandate can do justice to the State. The common citizen can be assured democratic space and effective dissent in Coalition Governments wherein checks and balances can be put in place to prevent the creation of a regime led by a dictatorial Chief Minister. Therefore in view of the Assembly elections on 2nd June, GOACAN calls upon Voters to consider this election as Goa's second Opinion Poll and come out in large numbers and vote in favour of accountability, transparency, good governance and sustainable development. ------------------------------------------------------------ GOA CIVIC AND CONSUMER ACTION NETWORK ----------------------------------------------------------- promoting civic and consumer rights in Goa ----------------------------------------------------------- GOACAN Post Box 187 Margao, Goa 403 601 GOACAN Post Box 78 Mapusa, Goa 403 507 mailto: [EMAIL PROTECTED] <http:///> ---------------------------------------------------------- __._,_.___ -------------- next part -------------- An HTML attachment was scrubbed...
