PERGAO

I think I remember the so called ‘Pergao’ (pronounce as in PERnem & marGAO)
in 1970s.

What is ‘pergao’?

It was a sort of general public notice or announcement where one man goes round
the village
with a drum (usually side drum - Reng-tang) and would stop at the fixed
stations or at
joints and play his drum and give the message to the villagers by saying it
louder so that
people can listen to it even from their homes. He would usually say it twice
loud and clear.
Some people would still ask him what was it all about and he would tell them
individually.

What messages and who sends the messenger (Pergao)?
Usaully, the local village panchayat announcing the gram sabha meetings and
other such
important or urgent matters. He would shout thus…

‘OH LOKA AITODIS 10VORAMCHER PONCHYATINT GRAM SOBHA (general body meeting)
TASTOLI, TUKAM
SOGLEANK KOLLIT KORUNK LAILAN’

There were no news papers that time and if there were not that many could read
it from the
villages. Plus there were no TV nor Phones or mobile phones.

Similarly, when some one dies in the village/Parish, another announcer (usually
same man)
would come around not with drum but the church bell (similar to this pic)

He would keep ringing the bell through out his journey (usually remote &
border areas) and
make his announcement at fixed stations or joints.

He would say..

‘…Arxe bhandavoilem Ros-Marie melam, morrn faleam sokanim 10 voramcher’

This bell was not an ordinary bell (or it is the same as the one usually used
during the
funeral processions, see pic). One had to pay for the bell charges plus the
man’s wages and
food and ‘copachem’ . All these charges boned by the funeral house (morna ghor).

These type of ‘Kapinn’ pergao were existed even in 1980s or may still exist
even now.

Here is a Pergao (modern & political one ) just for the Goans abroad about
the new
Government in Goa.
