I am an admirer of Dominic's writings, and have recommended his book to many people. All I meant to say was that when there is a statement like, "All people in Goa keep pigs," such a statement, as Margaret Mascarenhas points out, tends to render non-Catholic Goa invisible. I can well see that it would be inelegant and a big nuisance for Dominic to say repeatedly that he is talking of "Catholic" Goa. But since many of his articles appear by themselves (and not in the context of the book and its preface), some via media needs to be found, else people are confused. A statement like "Most Catholic homes in Goa keep pigs," would be more accurate. (No longer, though -- due to the stray dog nuisance, most Catholic homes in my neighbourhood have stopped keeping pigs.) The only reason I brought this up is because today in India we are facing a situation where right-wing forces are trying to draw an equation 'India = Hindu = Hindutva = nationalism'. India and Goa are pluralistic cultures and we need to keep that in mind. The 'Goa = Roman Catholic' equation is also something that the tourism lobby has been going out of its way to promote, probably in an attempt to lure Western tourists. That said, this is a minor issue, and I will hold my peace on the matter. No controversies sought :-) Meanwhile, I look forward to reading Dominic's future pieces. -- Question everything -- Karl Marx ------------------------------------------------------- Goanet recommends, and is proud to be associated with, 'Domnic's Goa' - A nostalgic romp through a bygone era.
