POTENTIAL DANGER TO LYCEUM BUILDING STEPHEN DIAS DONA PAULA
The sheer steep excavation of the hillside for the purpose of construction of a retaining wall on the Corte de Oiteiro side of the Lyceum building has led to fears among the residents of that area that the loose earth on the surface of the hillock will dislodge and be washed away in the eventuality of heavy rains thus endangering the lives of the residents of the area. Even the winding steps leading to the Lyceum and the High Court of Bombay in Goa could be affected due to the barrage of heavy rains in the city. Last year during the rains water from the uncut hill was cascading on the Corte de Oiteiro road footpath and now with loose earth the situation could be even worse. The PWD and the GSIDC have to take the blame in case of any untoward eventuality due to heavy rains. In fact the work should have been undertaken after the monsoon so as to prevent the possibility of threat to the people of that locality. Also the road side on the Corte de Oiteiro road has been cordoned off and especially during the peak traffic hours and due to heavy movement of vehicles there could be the possibility of accidents happening on the narrowed portion of this road. At least a suitable drainage should be made so that muddy water does not gush onto the road due to heavy rains. The Corporation of the City of Panaji should not have given permission for hill cutting apprehending a dangerous eventuality to the residents of the area and those using the Corte de Oiteiro road, which is a very busy route even to pedestrians going towards the bus stand.
