Benefits ofBreastfeeding

Part 1:

The first week in August isdesignated World Breastfeeding Week to highlight
thebeneficial role breast feeding plays in the lives of both newborn babies
andtheir mothers. The American Academy of Pediatrics and the World
HealthOrganization (WHO) recommend exclusive breastfeeding for the first six
monthsand up to one year of a baby's life, with other supplemental foods added
afterthe first year. There is indisputable data indicating that breast milk
isbetter suited to a newborn's nutritional needs than infant formula. Premature
babies, who have underdeveloped intestines and immature immune systems,
benefitfrom easily digestible breast milk. Since the milk is enriched withthe
mother’s immune cells, breastfeeding also prevents a number ofdiseases in
infants.
