This unfortunate situation in Goa is not just caused by pollution but also due to overfishing and lack of fishing laws. Anglers catch tiny young fish and will always find a recipe to cook these. These fish are deprived from growing up as adults and procreating, thereby depleting fishstocks. At the end, these very same morons complain that there is not fish in the waters!
The notion of sustainable fishing that involves throwing back live young fish back to the water just does not sink in on local angler's mindsets. The excuse on forums that 'if I don't take it home, somebody will' does not help the argument. I personally think that although many things in Goa are only getting worse - environment, corruption, etc - there is always a glimmer of hope if there are responsible people always ready to make a stand for the right thing to do. Awareness is key to anything in life. Like protesting and getting complaints to the fisheries department to take action against pollutants being thrown in fresh water bodies, having new laws prohibiting use of small holed nets, introduction of fishing seasons, etc are essential if one wants to see fish in the fresh waters of Goa. One can make one government body check another...
