Leo was my close friend and feĺlow footballer while at RPD college Belgaum. I cannot forget him.

LEO VELHO Benedito Antonio Redemptor Leao Velho, alias Adv Leo Velho was born to Mauricio Caetano Velho and Marina Aurora Lacerda at Chinchinim on 07 May 1934 He was the third child in the family of two brothers and two sisters The brother and sister died young He co mpleted SSCE at St Stanislau H S Bandra Bombay .B.A at Rani Parvati Devi College, Belgaum ,Karnataka.M.A at St Xavier`s College Bombay. LL.B at Raja Lakhamgouda Law College, Belgaum. Bar-at-Law, Sociey of Lincoln`s Inn, London  He was the unique bloom in his immediate family .He had a humble origin and in spite of financial constraints, with self motivated goal, polished his talents and personality like a multi faceted diamond, Leo can rightly be summed up as the lion in the den of Chinchinim Village. Thus far he is the only individual of the Village and surrounding villages graduating as a Barrister at law,a special feather in his cap of self achievements.. He maintained high standards of professional ethics in his service as a legal practitioner of repute He has left his indelible mark and footprints on the legal profession with honesty. He ably represented insurance companies in claim settlements with a human touch., It is noted that Judicial Officers treated him with due respects with his forceful but not boisterous presentations. Designated Notary of all India (August 1980 was patronized by clients , who trusted him instinctively, approached him with faith and confidence and loved his affable manners. He was the Educator at night Law school, at Margao for many years with students passing out with due respect to his knowledge. He maintained rapport with his students and was immensely popular and appreciated for his participatory rather than lecture method He represented United Goans and retained the seat for three terms as the MLA of then Navelim Constituency.(1967-72, 1972-77, 1977--1982) He displaced a seasoned, experienced, erudite politician with his armour of a charming personality, simplicity , humility , contagious smile and waving of hands in friendship . The masses endeared to him following him like a pied piper He left his signature in no small measure as an MLA of the constituency he nurtured and loved. He stood steadfast to his principles and did not change the party like a chameleon or opportunist. During his student days his streak of patriotism against the Portuguese regime of oppression was amply manifested in the movement for liberation of Goa, He  did not sought the label of freedom fighter.(Member of Azad Gomantak Dal). Served as Charter President Lions Club of Chinchinim 1980The virtue of generosity was a part of his character and personality trait. He encouraged and contributed to all those who approached him for a worthy cause of Chinchinim Village. It remains an open, commendable secret that gifts and presents on his birthday were all distributed to the poor. He displayed special attachment to his Chapel ward of Mingfoll and yearly contributed wholeheartedly towards activities He was a reputed soccer player and enthusiastically represented his Village Club CRCC and Institutions in football as defender.He also played Table tennis,Badminton,.Lawn tennis,, Cricket and participated in Athletics with laurels to his credit A popular most sought after Toast Master of his time. He was passionate about social service till his last breath 18-7-2010  He is blessed with well educated  professionally placed children settled in life with humble leanings and support of his wife Rica.,His stature, exalted position, profession could be a proud achievement but he and family did not root themselves in the City, visiting regularly his ancestral village and home We are truly proud of Adv Leo as one of the most honourable son of Chinchinim Village listed in the scroll of men who matter the most I was his student at Law, where his classes were not lectures, but participatory discussions in serious scholastic atmosphere He has instituted Antonio Joao Velho memorial award in Konkanni (Paternal Uncle)and Master Ernesto M Velho memorial award in Mathematics (brother) May his memory live forever Nelson Lopes Chairman P.C.Trust .Chinchinim , Sent from my iPhone
