Shortlisted for the Jaipur BookMark’s First Book Club 2018, Shadow of the
Palm Tree spotlights a little-known facet of Goan history…the presence of
African slaves in Goa who were brought down from Portuguese-Africa. Over
the years, some Goans not only bought slaves but joined the slave trade.
The novel tells the story of the Abreus who as a result of their role in
this lucrative trade, received not just power and prestige but a curse that
echoed across the generations.
