Wearing of masks as a preventative measure in public places has helped to contain the virus in the far east. Mask should be the N95 surgical masks which later should be disposed off and not washed. Cloth masks are useless. The propagation of the covid 19 has also been spread through asymptomatic means ie people specially the young spread the disease without any coughs and colds. Doctors advise only those attending to patients like docs and nurses should wear masks and also those having a cold/cough so others are not affected. In fact if masks are worn improperly and your hands touch the mask it can be harnful, Cleaning/ disinfecting a used mask is another problem. Be wary when buying a mask as they may be discarded ones being sold after cleaning. Safer to wear a cloth mask if you must when going out or one made from toilet paper/tissues that can be discarded after use.
