Lockdown and aftermath
The sudden lockdown though necessary has caught people off guard. The same
thing happened during demonetisation Those nights saw mad rush to offload and
exchange and now to empty stores of provisions. The extended period has left
people without daily necessities to tide over .On the very first day no milk
and bread supply a daily necessity
Proper planning has eluded the lockdown and post arrangements are in a total
disarray .People are anticipating prolonged periods and consequences on supply
chains with interstates transport banned.
Trying to work out home supply is putting the cart before horse. The sporadic
efforts of homedelivery are directionless and still to take off the ground
. The states , opposition should have been taken into confidence for it is a
National tragedy not confined to single party . Even those who have reasonable
stocks are keen to store for a year , it looks like .The CM ,Goa bowing to
pressure relaxed vegetable , fruits groceries shop to open shutters .What
followed is mad rush, jostling, pushing throwing social distancing to winds.
No marking or volunteers for orderly behaviour at all. Home delivery system
should have been put in place .Previous night of lockdown Chinchinim stores
were operating at midnight forced to close by police , exploiting the time gap
The need for daily essential supplies cannot be wished away. The elderly,
home alone, sick are put to the worst test
Just like post demonetisation scenario present lockdown is unfolding worst case
situation Announcements, implementation without proper planning of logistics is
counter productive. The mass exodus of migrant labour women, children without
food or water in scotching summer heat on foot to traverse over 400 kms plus is
a pathetic scene to destination. Govt has sent special planes to ferry Indians
abroad but poor people cannot be transported even byroad transport, a
discriminatory effort towards poor and marginalisef
The praise worthy efforts of Delhi Chief Minister rising quickly to the
occasion deserves appreciation The measures in place assuring migrants to stay
put , providing food and shelter has no parallel so far
There is need to enforce lockdown but essential supplies are life saving and
distribution must be systematic so that social distancing is not a casualty
The severe supply of any commodity is escalating costs is mist worrying
