Musical Collective is a term that describes a group of musicians in which membership is flexible and creative control shared. It is distinct from that of a traditional band. Goans in Bombay had their own ‘musical collectives’ the most well known of which were the Dhobitalao groups that gathered at Alfred Restaurant and were on short notice for weddings and other celebrations. I have written about them in my Aunties of Dhobitalao article and they were also featured in Bardroy Barreto’s Nachom Ya Kumpasar (Dance On The Rhythm) recent movie.
