I could see no connection at all between what I had said in a very polite reply to Jerry about his reference to "twisted minds"and your response to it. Please can you clarify? 2. You refer to hordes from Eastern Europe in the UK. I put it to you that you really must be reading material from the much derided UK tabloids with a consistent record of anti-immigration rhetoric in order to sell papers to those with a reading age of about 10. The facts are that there have been substantial numbers coming to the UK as of right, mainly from Poland, because of the expansion of the EU. Yet, there is a desperate shortage of labour here. For instance, vegetables and fruit (especially strawberries) are currently rotting because of a lack of pickers. They are not even available from Bulgaria and Romania presumably because upward labour mobility consequent to open access to the UK is making it difficult to get workers at the bottom end of the labour market. While there is plenty of work of all kinds, the poor guys from Eastern Europe are having to struggle over accommodation. Did your tabloid reading tell you that some have taken to sleeping in public toilets and also that the Polish Government has had to help thousands of their fellowmen who are desperate and depressed that their dream of plentiful money has not materialised in the UK and are consequently being resettled back in Poland? And yes, I have established myself here through brain power and sheer hard work and I hope you are also achieving something likewise in New York. 3. Your reference for [enlightenment] to the bishops in New Guinea is too opaque for me to figure out. While I note your occasional quips on Goanet, I am sure many of us would appreciate something at least a little coherent and substantive from you instead of vague one-liners. Please will you try to do this now that you have safely returned from Oyster Bay--the place I had once loved outside Dar es salaam? Good wishes Cornel PS Your subject heading of "if Cornel Does Really Care!" is also totally lacking in being informative in any conceivable way. Can you kindly throw some light on what you had in mind? And re "vittles", did you correctly mean victuals? eric pinto wrote: Funny thing, i don't want to imagine our site without either Gilbert or Cornell, although heaven help, sanctissima Afra is back ! Things dont happen in a vacuum, and if Gilbert should ask around, he will learn about the social scene of our crowd in East Africa in the early decades of the century that just ended. Perhaps it was a natural in a colonial set up that required a pecking order, and we filled in the gaps eagerly, but mean is mean, and Tony Barros/Cornell have expanded on the subject in the past. i gather that Cornell has seen recompense over a fruitful career in Britain. If at all, i picture deja vu all over again for him with the arrival of hoardes of Slavs in London. and i imagine those nice folk are going to keep Cornell pretty uneasy in the years ahead. And now to the real point : Goa/Goans need the vittles [ did you mean victuals?] that flow our way from western diocesan collections. Every last person enjoys the benefits, religion or looks aside. Cast in a bad light, it is just as easy for Cornells bishop's to consider looking at New Guinea instead. eric.
