Hei Kevin,

Thank you for pointing out that the goanet is broadly a goan catholic forum.
I had no idea that it was. Thank you for putting me right on that. I can be
forgiven as I am new to goanet.

Even so, I think we are agreed on much of what you have to say.

Tolerance to peoples religion and faith is what made Cryus the Great great
as early as 550 BC. Yes, I applaud your position of staying on focus on
topics under discussions and raising the inconsistencies of religion when
relevant. Unfortunately, I cannot say that I have read any of your
discussion mails on goanet. Again, the inconsistencies in religion are
legion and should keep goanet well supplied for a very long time.

Ah now here is something you said in the mail that I am not convinced about
that the legal system owes much to the concept of gods, the supernatual or
religion which have been with us a long time.

It would appear that going back as far as 2250 BC we have had some form of
legal system or other. When people lived together they had to have laws to
settle disputes. This is what I found on the net " rule is in the style of
the patriarch: he issues rulings after the fact and without reference to any
established rules. Primitive man at this stage supposed that the gods
dictated to the king.

The Evolution of Law
If we look back at the history of law in many societies, we can discern the
same evolution taking place in the same sequence.

. First, people live in family units with rule by the patriarch.
. Second, a patriarchal sovereign, who is usually heroic, issues rulings
in individual cases after the fact.

. Third, customs grow up from the sovereign's rulings.

. Fourth, a code is created. This code bears on relationships between
families or between the patriarchs of the families.

. Fifth, the code begins to bear on individuals rather than families.

. Sixth, more relationships are defined by contracts, i.e., "a movement
from Status to Contract." 1

Accustomed as we are to legal systems with voluminous codes and well defined
procedures for contracts, many of these don't sound like much of a legal
system to our ears. But for most of the existence of humans, these are the
systems they lived under."

True religion has been with us for a long long time. However, it is a
Schrödinger cat paradox. We will never know if religion has retarded human
progress or advanced it. And people being realistic will take up a state
they find convenient. It is perfectly possible to be devout and christian in
church and unchristian outside it. My parents achieved that to perfection.
Like Schrödingers cat different states are possible at the same time Live
Cat or Dead Cat, Smart Cat or Dumb Cat Christian Cat or Non Christian Cat.
Schödinger did not have a cat in the box, my parents would do just as well.
hahaha.

There used to be a comedy programme on the BBC where a question would be
fielded to the panel. One person on the panel was a farmer I think but his
answer always began with "The answer lies in the soil." It was funny no
matter what the topic was the answer always was in the soil.

So as a christian forum I guess it is understandable that the answer is
always in invoking Christianity. :))).

Cheers
