With no respite to the spiraling number of COVID-19 cases, the United States of America over the last two months has witnessed unparalleled political mayhem after the very unpredictable Donald Trump refused to accept defeat in that November 3rd Presidential election despite having lost both the popular mandate by over 5 million votes and the Electoral College as well. The defeat could not have been any more resounding and decisive.
Donald Trump in his last ditch attempt to high-handedly hold on to office orchestrated that carnage at the US Capitol building. And for this botched coup attempt which brought American Democracy under grave threat Donald Trump needs to be impeached and must face the rigours of law for all his unpardonable misdeeds. Despite the whole world having congratulated Joe Biden and Kamala Harris on their spectacular triumph as universally anticipated, the 74 year old Donald Trump continued to stubbornly claim that he had won the Presidential race. Even some of his closest aides have abandoned him because of his wild allegations of widespread fraud. It is a sad but hypocritical irony that Donald Trump would cross an ocean to lecture and impose democracy on others but did not cross the lawns of the White House to practice what he preached by accepting the will of the people at his own doorstep. It is a very embarrassing end in office for the now disgraced 45th President of USA, whose entire four year tenure was mired by a chain of controversies. In his last few weeks he brought unprecedented shame to the very high office the people of America had entrusted him with. The overwhelming majority of Americans will not forgive Donald Trump for converting in a matter of days the once most powerful office in the world into the laughing stock by thrashing Democracy, demonstrating rank disrespect for individual rights and freedoms besides mocking the rule of law. He would have done well knowing that the game was up to heed the wise words of Abraham Lincoln when he said ‘Elections belong to the people. It is their decision. No man is good enough to govern another man without the other’s consent’. With President elect Joe Biden and Vice- President Kamala Harris set to assume office on January 20th there is hope that a Government of the people by the people and for the people will take over for the good of America and the world. But it will take time to restore the now blackened White House.
