International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ ---------- Forwarded message ---------- From: Noronha,Ronald [Ontario] Date: Jul 11, 2007 11:10 AM Subject: Goa's Eroding Beaches It doesn't take a rocket scientist to understand that any shore with a sandy beach is susceptible to beach loss from erosion due to coastal and oceanic physical processes. In Goa's case this phenomenon has been further accelerated and accentuated due to callous human induced activity. Voluminous extraction of tons of sand, indiscrimate felling of trees near the coastline, agriculture land conversion, construction of illegal beachfront shoreline structures - the local environment movement sounded the clarion call many moons ago, with the potential for irreversible effects. However the slow response time of the state government to 'awaken' to the consequences of such a forcing until now is hardly surprising and perhaps irrelevant too, unless they are committed to address the magnitude of the problem. Much of the consequences for future disastrous erosion events are still in the "inertia pipeline" -the most telling, sea level rise -much of the Indian coastline/and beach property will be submerged within decades to come. Rather than squabbling over petty issues the state government working in close consort with the opposition party and other agencies/groups, has to establish a sound and manageable scientific and economic strategic and comprehensive plan to protect and preserve what left of our beautiful beaches. To do so otherwise would spell an ecological disaster to our famed sunny Goan beaches and an economic meltdown of the tourism industry.
