Dear Gilbert,

Very interesting comment. I forwarded it to the editorial board, and we invite
you to format the comment as a Letter to the Editor. If you agree, can you send
it by December 31st, to be published in the next issue to be released in the
first few days of January? Sorry for such a short deadline.

Best regards,
Luis

Assunto: Do Goans Need a New Year's Resolution?

The latest (Christmas/ New Year issue of REVISTA (a Casa de Goa publication
from Lisbon) had some interesting articles including our own. Out of interest,
I was reading the article, first published by Heraldo in 1917, which quoted
Tavernier - a visitor to Goa in 1676.
The article was interesting; but one paragraph struck me and likely will make
today's readers question if education, progress, and mobility have changed us;
or do we need a New Year's Resolution?

Regards, GL

Konkani is not a dialect of Marathi.
By Mgr. Sebastiao Radolfo Dalgado (1855-1922)
Parts 2 originally published in Heraldo No. 2570, 13, February 1917.
Translated from the Portuguese by Oscar de Noronha.

 Abstracted from the article:

“But what would be incontestable truth to others, in Goa quite unsurprisingly
finds astute opponents, who by hocus-pocus seek to prove that white is black.

It is not without reason that Tavernier wrote in 1676 (Voyages 1712 edition II
p 159) “As for trials, they never come to an end; they are handled by the
Canarins (Goan Catholics), natives of the country who practice the professions
of solicitor and procurator, and there are no people in the world more cunning
and subtle.”

Similarly, a very meticulous judge of the Supreme Court told me, not many
months ago, that libels from India, besides being long winded and confused,
were not much commended for legal erudition but rather abounded in petty
objection and twists to muddle up the truth and obfuscate the law. What the
cradle bestows only the tomb takes away.”
