"In a comprehensive interview to Karan Thapar to analyse and understand the
campaign waged by Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party, the outcome
of the elections and the future facing Modi, political scientist Christophe
Jaffrelot has said that if Modi can’t handle the coalition – and in his 23
years in power he has no experience of doing so – the RSS could replace him
with someone like Nitin Gadkari rather than allow the government to fall.

Jaffrelot, Professor of South Asian Politics at Sciences Po in Paris and
King’s College in London, says if there is a danger to the government
because of Modi’s inability to handle a coalition and his allies, the RSS
would be willing to look for a person with the qualities of Atal Bihari
Vajpayee. Calling the results 'a tremor that could have aftershocks',
Jaffrelot said that the 'loss of majority is a setback for Narendra Modi
precisely because he will have to make concessions and he’s not used to
making compromises'”.
