Goa has been producing great musicians and singers for generations. We all
know of so many who have been awarded international prizes and have achieved
so much in India as well as abroad. Remo, Lorna, Emiliano da Cruz, Agostinho
da Cruz, Cotta family, Maestro Antonio de Figueiredo, Patricia Rosario,
Gonzaga Coutinho, etc.

I would like to bring to your attention the recent great musical
achievements by two of our young Goans based in Goa:

1. Orlando de Noronha is an excellent Goan musician besides being also
famous for having introduced the art of the hand painted tiles in Goa a few
years back (an art he learned in Portugal).

Six months ago in January 2007, the President of Portugal - Prof. Dr. Cavaco
Silva - visited India (including Goa) on an official state visit. Orlando
was a musician at the Goa hotel where the President and the Presidential
Committee stayed and he soon impressed all of them with his musical talents.
One night the President organised a gala dinner for Goan VIPs and the main
performer was the Portuguese fado singer Katia Guerreiro. Katia who had met
Orlando days before and was very impressed with his musical talents
surprised him in true "de repente" style and invited him to the stage to
accompany her on the fado "Havemos de ir a Viana". However, Orlando did not
have a Portuguese guitar (the lead instrument for fado), so he accompanied
Katia with a bandolim.

On their return to Portugal, everyone cherished those moments and remembered
Orlando. Katia was determined that Orlando should have a Portuguese guitar.
Everyone agreed. Dr. Carlos Rodrigues, President of the Portuguese bank BIG
(Banco de Investimento Global) who was also part of the Portuguese
Presidential Committee and attended the gala dinner that night in Goa,
volunteered to sponsor Orlando's award. So, Orlando was invited to Portugal
and received on the 9th of June a Portuguese Guitar from the hands of the
President of Portugal himself. The ceremony was integrated in the official
celebrations of the day of Portugal, Camoes and of the Portuguese
Communities, in Setubal (south of Lisbon), and was described in local
newspapers and also the official site of the Portuguese Republic:

2. The very young Nerissa Almeida Santimano from Goa is one of the 10 world
finalists (out of 200 in total) of an international on-line luso-descendents
song contest organised by the Portuguese Ministry of Foreign Affairs,
PT.com, Valentim de Carvalho and RTP, and promoted at large by the famous
Canadian and Luso-descendent singer Nelly Furtado.
Nerissa's song - "Sem Asas - Without Wings" - was voted 37812 times and
listened 46576 times over the internet. It is sung in 3 different languages:
Portuguese, Konkani and English.

Having won several competitions, Nerissa gained confidence and wrote her
first song in 2005 called "Take me Back". She has now written three more
songs. Nerissa participated in the All India Rock Concert called "Battle of
the Bands" where she won one of the best vocalist awards. She has also been
winning consecutively at the Portuguese singing competitions held by the
Fundacao Oriente in Goa, and has been to many Indo-Portuguese events to sing
a few numbers. "Sem Asas" is a compilation written by the Ex Consul General
of Portugal to Goa - Dr. Pedro Cabral Adao - who expired last year and
composed by Mr. Domingos for a song contest in 3 languages.

Nerissa will be one of the 10 world finalists singing live at the final on
the 12th August 2007, in Braga, Portugal. The event will be broadcasted by
the Portuguese International TV Channel RTPi live, so everyone can watch in
the world and in Goa as well. Let us all wish Nerissa best of luck for the
12th August final!
