(*). Reporters at the French (language) international broadcaster TV5 seem to have taken their cue from it when they descended on Goa to trace and then exhibit the place's unmistakable and ever enduring Portuguese character. The documentary was aired yesterday night (22.30 GMT - and is possibly traceable on the tv5 site), and I must say it was great fun. Despite the fact that everybody spoke English, and most problems besetting Goa - as this list illustrates daily - were deftly glossed over. We were taken on a grand tour of white-washed churches, palatial houses (Mario Miranda's one featuring prominently) and assorted personalities to go with them (an architect, a young advocate, a smooth-talking upper echelon cleric, and two cute expat artist women - but no critics, no infernal Alvarez-Noronha duo!), all exuding an air of local, tropical patriotism and particularism firmly rooted in ... Portuguese 'values'. Suffering of a mild dose of 'Goastalgia' myself (that's the reverse phenomenon, prevalent in some circles of the former 'mother country'...) I must say I quite enjoyed it. But I think the Salazarists-lite ("give us the beautiful uniforms and the vinho verde, but not the PIDE") must have enjoyed it even more. Well, cheers to all, and see you someday in Casa Portuguesa Restorante of this sympathetic lawyer! patrizio and Diiiinooos! (must do with Groningen, but no dearth of Bacalao & Dao Branco over there...) ----- (*) The Austro-Hungarian empire never had colonies (outside Europe), so this was highly hilarious. Just as to have an admiral as head of state of a landlocked country, as Hungary was after 1919. unfortunately, to political opponents and other critics, the Horthy regime was no operette fun at all.
