It was heart-warming to watch yesterday morning the Bombay High Court full Court Reference in memory of late Justice Eurico Santana da Silva. The words of Justice Mahesh Sonak were reverberating and said it all about the very illustrious Eurico da Silva who was a beacon, a rare fusion of knowledge and wisdom in the field of Law and Jurisprudence.
Advocate General Devidas Pangam and President of Goa High Court Bar Association Adv. J.E.Coelho Pereira had also resounding and very emphatic words about our late Justice Silva’s wisdom and uprightness. However, it was amusing to hear the Assistant Solicitor General of India Pravin Faldessai who said ‘Justice Eurico da Silva was born under the outrageous Portuguese rule’. Given the occasion wasn’t this an uncalled for and out of context statement? A true tribute to the very eminent, calm and composed jurist would be if late Justice Silva remains a benchmark with every Judge aspiring to attain his level of performance, integrity and competence. Let us hope and be optimistic that the Judiciary remains as a pillar of hope to always ensure that Good Governance and the Rule of Law prevails
