Our tiatrists do a great service to the Goan society – they educate our masses through their tiatros and songs. In my opinion, they are more concerned about us and better foresighted than our politicians, who show their concern for us only during election time – to get votes from us.

The article in the link below talks about three Panchayats passing a resolution in Gram Sabha to keep a watch on the influx of non-Goans coming to their villages.

M. Boyer, one of the living legends of the Konkani stage and Padmashree award winner, who is suffering from Parkinson’s disease, had been sounding such warnings all along and he expressed his feelings in one of his songs a little over a decade ago.

The norm in the past to contest Assembly elections was to first get elected as a Sarpanch, serve the public, gain their confidence, contest the election and get elected as an MLA. The non-Goans are already following this path.

In the last Village Panchayat election, the Sancoale residents elected a migrant as their Sarpanch, thus setting a precedent. This is only the beginning. There must be many waiting to follow suit.

If the lady survives in the position (she finds it difficult to articulate in Konkani or English, as her mother tongue appears to be Hindi), her next move will be to contest Assembly elections. Who can then stop migrants from becoming Chief Minister of the state? This is exactly what M. Boyer expresses in the last line of his song.

“Nam tor ek dis Goencho Muki Montri pasun bhailea gaumcho zatolo”. (Otherwise, one day we might even end up having an outsider for a Chief Minister)!

Here are the lyrics of the song “BHAILO LOK GOENKAR ZATA” (Outsiders become Goans), composed and sung by M. Boyer taken from his audio cassette “TIATRIST”:

I
