A Goan only needs an excuse to drink. If you advise a Goan drinker that drinking is bad for his health and that he should give it up, he immediately defends himself - pat comes the reply, often: “Soro Devan kela; padri pasun missar dakancho soro pieta. Tor, hanv soro pielear tantun kitem vaitt asa?” (God made liquor. Even a priest drinks wine when he celebrates a Mass. So, what’s wrong if I drink?)

The good part is that most of us know how to control drink but there are some who cross their limit and become a problem to their families. Some go to the extent of spending the whole day and night at a bar thus making it a full-time job and bringing upon themselves wrath from their wives - the result? Sometimes wives challenge their husbands and end up drinking.

Here is a joke in Salcete Konkani taken from Jr. Jose Rod’s audio cassette “Visonachia Pottan Bhangarachi Biskit”. Let us see what happens to a non-drinking wife when she gulps down the first “soreacho gontt” (mouthful of liquor):

“SORO PIONK KESO TRAS!”
