World Under 8 Girls Champion Ivana Furtado suffered a shock defeat when she
lost to Mongolian Uranderdene Tegshduren in the second round of the Asian
Youth Chess Championships being played at Al Ain, U.A.E. There are still 7
more rounds to go, so there is still chance for Ivana to recover and win the
tournament. However, she will have to put it across National Under 7
Champion C.H. Meghna when they play each other some time during the event.
In the third round, Ivana will face Abdulmalik Zhansaya of Kazhakastan as
she attempts to make a comeback in the Championships.

Highly fancied Vidit Gujarathi (ELO 2277) also lost to Shahin Koohestani
(ELO 2099) of Iran in the Boys Under 14 section and last year's Gold
Medallist Prince Bajaj (ELO 1945) was shocked by Tran Tuan Minh of Vietnam
in the Boys Under 10 section to complete a round of upsets. In the Girls
Under 14 Section, Padmini Rout (ELO 2246) was held to a draw by compatriot
Y.G. Sriharika (ELO 1917) so she will have to go all out in the remaining
rounds to continue her attempt at winning a hattrick of Gold Medals in the
Asian Championships!
