'Open skies sans hotel rooms is a damper on travellers'
30 Aug, 2007, 0920 hrs IST, PTI

<Rigid land use laws, skyrocketing real estate prices and steeplechase of
formalities have kept the industry from building more hotels required to
accommodate the swell in tourist arrivals. ... Dwelling on the challenges
faced by the airlines, Robey Lal, the former country manager of
International Air Transport Association (IATA), said the biggest issue
before the sector is safety. "One tragic accident and its impact is like
that of wildfire. It affects the insurance, the markets and the way people
travel," Lal said. The second issue is the quality of services after the
passenger has disembarked, such as baggage handling, facilities at the
airport and treatment by the ground staff which continues to be a common
area of complaint among the tourists, Lal said. >

Regarding safety, Lal is no doubt having the recent Congonhas (Sao Paulo)
airport experience in the back of his mind. On quality of airport (and
airline) services, we all know how far Dabolim has to go in this regard.
