International Cuisine Conference on Traditional Asian Diet Panaji, Goa, September 2-5, 2007 - http://www.indologygoa.in Online Media Partner: http://www.goanet.org ------------------------------------------------------------------------ XAVIER'S NEWS & FEATURES E-SERVICE (XNFES) The Mundo Lusofano at Xavier's "Portuguese language is not the past of Goa but to a great extent its future" said Dr. Sergio Mascarenhas de Almeida, inaugurating the annual Portuguese Day under the theme, 'O Mundo Lusofono' which means 'the Lusophone world' organized by St. Xavier's College on August 29, 2007, in association with Fundacao Oriente. It was a day dedicated to the Portuguese Language and culture. The event began with the address by the Principal of the College, Prof. Newman Fernandes. He said that the Portuguese Day is an annual event of the College for the promotion of the Portuguese Language. He added that a western language can make a difference in job opportunities and we are blessed to have had contact with the Portuguese for so many years. He said he had initiated the Portuguese singing contest as Principal of Rosary College and Xavier's is promoting the study of Portuguese language and culture. He ended by expressing his gratitude to Fundacao Oriente and Instituto Camoes. In his address Dr. Sergio, spoke about the importance of a language. He said that Goa should have been the Centre of Portuguese language in India, but it is not. He added that there is a wealth of information in Goa that is so relevant to Goa, written by Goans in Portuguese language with solutions to many traditional problems. He lauded the students of Xavier's for their active involvement in the field of Portuguese music too. Dr. Jose Miguel Ribeiro Lume, Director of C.L.P. and Instituto Camoes, Panaji, was the guest of honour and spoke about the work of the Institute and the Department of Portuguese, Goa University in promoting the Portuguese language. He also invited students to make full use of the facilities and programmes offered by Institute Camoes, which is the official organ of the Government of Portugal. The cultural programme that followed consisted of lively Portuguese songs, a monologue on the Jet-set Mocambicano, 'Mar Portugues' recited by Karina Gouveia Pinto, culminated in a skit 'O Mundo Lusofono'. Prof. Dilip Loundo of the Department of Sociology, Goa University spoke on the theme 'The Portuguese language and world economy - A look at Brazil'. A quiz competition was held for the Higher Secondary Schools and Colleges. Of the eight teams registered, five qualified for the final round. The quiz consisted of five rounds i.e. General Knowledge, Visual, Bom Portugues, Proverbs and Brazil. The winners were Don Bosco H.S.S. with 130 points, followed by St. Xavier's H.S.S. and Our Lady of Rosary, Dona Paula. In the post lunch session a documentary on Portugal was screened followed by the prize distribution of the quiz competition. A Dialogue and Story-telling Competition was held in the afternoon for the students of Standard VIII, IX and X. The winners of the dialogue competition were: Don Bosco in the first place, Our Lady of Rosary in the second place and Loyola High School in the third place, while the prize of the story telling went to Fatima Convent, Margao, Lourdes Convent, Saligao and Don Bosco High School, Panaji, respectively. The judges were Profa. Nalini Sousa, Profa. Fatima de Souza and Dr. Filipe Rodgrigues e Melo. Cash prizes were given to the winners. The other off stage items included a Portuguese book fair by Instituto Camoes and Third Millennium Publishers, an exhibition of Portuguese products put up by the College and the sale of Portuguese products by 'A Nau' - a Portuguese shop. A Portuguese flavour was added by the sale of traditional snacks and sweets. The programme which drew a good response from members of the public teachers, parents and students was coordinated by Ms. Sara de Melo, Ms. Isabel Noronha and Ms. Marie Lou Ferrao with the help of students. The Portuguese comperes was Manuela Lobo (F.Y.B.A.) and the English compere was Ms. Tasha D'Souza.
