The Tri Continental Film Festival began in Latin America in 2002, in Africa in 2003 and in Asia in 2004, and has since become the primary platform for human rights cinema from the three continents that form part of the global South. The festival will showcase the best films from the last three years Tricontinental Film Festival. The festival is being organised by Moving Images, Breakthrough (New Delhi) and the International Centre Goa. The festival opens with Ruhi Hamid & Angus Macqueen "The Rockstar and the Mullahs" asking "Why can't spirituality be expressed in a pop song?" are the words of Salman Ahmad, Pakistan's most famous pop musician and the lead singer of Junoon. Chote Rehmat Khan will lead discussions on this film after the screening on the 28th of September. Other films include "Leila Khaled Hijacker" tells the story of the first woman ever to hijack an airplane, who she is and what made her become a freedom fighter to some and a terrorist to others. "Sisters in Law" by academy award wining Kim Longinotto and Florence Ayisi. It is a fascinating and sometimes hilarious account of legal recourse for victims in cases of child abuse, rape and attempts to end a brutal marriage where divorcee is taboo. This film is known for its fierce compassion for the victims. Dr. Pramod Salgaonkar, former chairperson of State Women's Commission will coordinate viewers sharing around this film. Anita Khemka's, "Between the Lines - India's Third Gender" sets out to explore the hidden hijra subcultures of Bombay. Deborah Kaufman & Alan Snitow's "Thirst' has a particular relevance for Goa as its theme is often referred to as the issue which will bring on the Third World War. The film discusses whether water will remain a common resource or will it be a commodity which can be bought and sold. "John and Jane" is yet another film of strong relevance for us as the new urban Indian arrives. It discusses call centre personnel who work in florescent interiors, develop a global accent answering Americans over night long shifts. The film raises disturbing questions about the nature of personal identity and what it means to be 'Indian' in a 21st century globalised world. These are a sample of the films from the Tri Continental film festival that belong to a variety of genres such as humour, musical, documentary and feature. Every one of these films takes on particularly relevant issues and makes it possible for us to get an insiders view of human problems across very different cultures. These are stories of victims and heroism in the face of defeat.
