Practically everything in Goa has witnessed a dramatic change over the past half century - some things for better; some for worse. Joint-families do not exist anymore – each married family member lives separately.

There was a time parents were respected and cared for by children until they breathed their last. But that love, respect and care are no more – nowadays, when parents become old, they are dumped in old-age homes where they breathe their last and carry the photo of their care-takers in their eyes instead of their beloved ones.

Until a couple of decades ago, 'dowry' was a pest in Goa but it is almost eradicated now except in the interior pockets of the state. Thank God for the art of 'love', most Goan boys and girls fall in love and get married rather than go for "soiriken kazar" (arranged marriage) which usually introduced 'dowry' into the arrangements.

Besides dowry, we also had "ghor-zanvoim" system, which was quite common in the days of yore. While arranging dowry for a girl was a Herculean task for most Goans then, some well-to-do families who had only one female child were not only prepared to give unlimited dowry to anyone marrying their daughter but they were also willing to transfer their house, property and wealth in their son-in-law's name, but with a condition – he had to leave his parents and home and move into his in-law's residence.

For many, it was a golden opportunity which they did not want to pass – they grabbed it and became slaves of their in-laws! It worked fine with most, especially with those who didn't have a job, but there were others who couldn't do without their parents and original home. So, they gave up the luxury for parents' love and returned home.

In the following lyrics, the late Jacinto Vaz sings the song as a victim of dowry. He beats up his parents and shifts to his in-law's place but, as fate would have it, he is driven away and is forced to live on the streets.

In a paralytic condition, he regrets his action and wishes to return home but the door is closed for him. He now realizes the importance of his parents, who, unlike his wife, stood by him at all times.

The last two lines of the song convey a strong message:

Doth ghetlear tuvem bailechem aikochem poddtta
(If you receive dowry, you have to listen to your wife)
Pai-maimcher bodol’lear bhava oxem ghoddtta
(This is what happens if you turn against your parents)

Here is one of the oldest lyrics of the song “DOTH GHETLEAR” composed and sung by the late Jacinto Vaz:
