One cannot speak in Antruzi Konkani to some one familiar with just Karwari or Malwani Konkani. Which ever Anna Marie you are talking about, it is safest she does not employ Kannad girls to be her domestic help. In Kannada, "Anna marie" means "baby elephant". When I introduced a slim friend of mine by that name to a few of my classmates in Bangalore [now Bengalooru or the "native place of beans"], they had a tough time controlling their laughter. But, of course, you are wrong ;-( Scores of people have decided to speak in Konkani and have paid a pre-publication price of Rs.175/- for the book "Konknni Course in Roman Script" to TSKK, Porvorim. The book will be released on 29 Sept. at 10.00 A.M. by Tomazinho Cardoz, former Speaker of Goa Legislative Assembly ...and always a fluent Konkani speaker. He has a good voice and there is a lot to sing about these days in the Konkani world. The TSKK book will be available at Rs.200/- at the release function and for Rs.250/- a copy at Broadway Bookshop thereafter. French language cannot die as long as international recipes are in that language ...and the French do not shift to English like Goans did after Liberation in 1961. The colonies would do well to shift to their native tongue as have done the people of Puducheri [If you are wondering what that is....it is the same as the French colony of Pondicherry near Tamil Nadu, formerly Madras State.] Latin is the language of all IUCN classification for plants, animals , insects , fossils, bacteria, virus, fungi whatever. The Latin mass is back internationally thanks to Cardinal Ratzinger turned Pope Benedict VI. Even the dying may be annointed with Latin prayers. So there! Doordarshan has Sanskrit news. Sanskrit will remain in the news for some time ...at least as long as the BJP and the VHP are around to discuss Ram Sethu, Janmabhoomi and Vedic maths. It is a calculated risk. The nodes one should look for are not anode and cathode but Rahu and Ketu ;-( Anyone gunning for Zorba the Greek?? What artificial support are you talking of ? If at all, Konkani has been suppressed by foisting an artificial dialect on to a majority that understands it not. The insistence on a single script for Konkani is like adding insult [salt] to the injury! there is no problem with the script. The problem is the insistence and imposition by denying the ground reality. With you and I writing a little bit of Konkani [in Roman script out of sheer convenience] on the Goanet and others writing on other net groups, Konkani is moving freely in cyberspace. Zor rodd'tta pejek. Sorkar mhunnta PEZ nakam, amkam zai SEZ !! Mapxean fogg zata sod'dam sanje salvi magir. Fest aitara dis! Mog asundi. Languages die or lose prominence all the time, this is the order of things. Even a language like French, which was once an international language has lost its prominence and no amount of insisting by the French, that their language is of some value to the world, or their continued financing of the promotion of French in their former colonies is going to prolong the demise of French. Ofcourse I could be entirely wrong about Konkani. Scores of people could suddenly decide to talk in it, write in it and use it to write soft-ware code but given the fact that Ana Marie tells us the best way to learn Konanki is to hire domestic help, I sincerely doubt it. mog or (fogg) asundi :-) selma --- Miguel Braganza <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote: > Please check the basis of your assumptions.
