Goa leaders meet Sonia over ticket for by-poll

Panaji, Oct 08: Chief Minister Digamber Kamat and other
state leaders, including Goa Pradesh Congress Committee president Fransisco
Sardinha, met party chief Sonia Gandhi in New Delhi on Sunday evening on the
issue.

The Congress Central leadership is likely to take a decision on allotting the
ticket
for the October 30 South Goa Lok Sabha by-poll
in a day or two.

"I have briefed the party president on the overall issue. The decision
will come either today evening or tomorrow," Kamat said here today.

"There is a prescribed system followed to finalise the ticket. Either the
Congress Parliamentary Board or some central body will meet and discuss the
issue before announcing the name," he said.

Save Goa Front president Churchill Alemao, who also met the Congress president
after the CM's appointment, expressed confidence that the Congress leaders
would honour their commitment.

"My support to the Kamat-led government was on condition that my daughter
Valenka should be given Congress ticket for Lok Sabha by-poll...I feel that
Congress will honour its commitment," Alemao, whose party is a part of the
coalition government, said.

He claimed that Valenka's name would be declared by the Congress tomorrow.

"Valenka fits to be a Lok Sabha member as she is a practising Supreme
Court advocate and is regularly attending all debates in the Parliament. I am
pressing for her name only because she has interest in serving the
people," he said.
