Hello Alfred,

I am assured that working for someone, be they working privately for someone
in a house, be they there for looking after someone's children, or doing other
jobs such as washing & ironing, gardening or cleaning the house, IS a job &
from what I have read on this forum, and others, domestic workers, however you
discribe them, ARE bona-fide workers and ought to be treated as such.

I am not sure where you disagree with me, the description of SERVANT in some
countries is demeaning to others in another country, however whatever one does,
and gets PAID to do so OUGHT to be treated as a worker and given the respect
the job carries.

In some countries there are sex SLAVES, which are flaunted in public windows
from Holland, which prides itself on its "liberalism" to Thailand where there
is little protection of these "slaves", but if you call them sex workers with
rights and pensions, medical check-ups etc, you can then say its ok, as in Goa
where young girls are also forced into this trade, as SLAVES but I think many
would prefer to be a SERVANT and been paid for their work, than being forced
into phyical and mental torment several times a day by someone who pays the
madame for the "service" she provides the men than sweat over her.........

Servant, Slave, one former is paid, the latter traditionally is not. We all
have various jobs we do not like but if we CHOOSE one form of work against
another then it is a CHOICE made, rightly or wrongly or whether it was an
informed choice is another matter.

However the person responsible for the servant / worker / slave has certain
standards to adhere to, it appears to me that perhaps this house owner was not
happy with the work done by his servant / worker / slave and sliced off an ear.

This is abhorrant to me & everyone on this forum and beyond no doubt and he /
she ought to be punished, the injured compensated sufficiently to deter such
barbarous acts against another human being, whether a paid one or not.

John,

While I disagree with you that a "house servan" within the purview of a
"bona-fide job, the matter definitely merits
full response from the External Affairs ministry of India.

The legitimate authirity to initiate such response lies with the NRI
Commission.
