With many thanks and kind regards, Yours sincerely, Prof. Newman Fernandes PRINCIPAL PRESS NOTE The Department of Electronics and Bio-technology of St. Xavier's College, Mapusa, are organizing a talk on "GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE - REGULATING EARTH'S THERMOSTAT THROUGH TECHNOLOGY", on 4th December, 2007, at 2:30 p.m. in the College Hall. The resource person is Dr. Joaquim I. Goes, Senior Research Scientist, Bigelow Laboratory for Ocean Sciences, U.S.A. Dr. Joaquim I. Goes has major interest in the general field of biological oceanography, with special reference to marine phytoplankton and how they react with the environment to influence the health of our planet. His most recent work in this direction has led to the development of a satellite based method that makes it possible to estimate the drawdown of atmospheric carbon dioxide into the oceans by phytoplankton. Presently, he is working on a research project which is aimed at understanding the consequences of enhanced ultraviolet radiation on the marine ecosystem. He is also working to develop the Flow Field-Flow Fractionation (FFFF) technique for use in marine sciences. He has various publications in his name in national and international journals, and also has professional memberships and has received various awards. All those interested are invited to attend the talk.
